Will I experience enough legal issues in my lifetime to make legal insurance worth the money?
Three out of four Americans will experience at least one legal issue a year***. Some are planned — like creating a will or trust to protect and provide for your kids. Others are unplanned — like getting one too many traffic tickets and suddenly being at risk of losing your driver’s license. Legal insurance is there for it all so when you need legal help and an attorney, you don’t have to stress about where to turn or how you’ll afford it.
How soon can I use ARAG legal insurance after I purchase it?
You can use your insurance for covered legal matters the same day that we receive and process your payment. You’ll receive a confirmation email that will give you instructions on how to log in to your member account and access help right away.
Is there a limit to how often I can use ARAG legal insurance?
No, there are no usage limits. This means you can get professional legal assistance whenever you need it. For each legal matter you address, you pay a $250 deductible. Then network attorney fees are 100% paid in full for covered legal matters.
Does legal insurance cover pre-existing conditions?
No, this is an insurance policy that covers legal matters that occur after you have purchased the policy. The earliest date for any of the following events is used to determine whether a legal matter is covered:
- Written notice of a legal dispute is sent or filed by you or received by you
- A ticket or citation is issued
- An attorney is hired
If any of these events occur before you purchase a policy, you still have the reduced fee services benefit available to you for that particular matter of at least 25 percent off network attorney fees. Subject to exclusions.
What DOESN'T an ARAG legal insurance policy cover?
ARAG legal insurance policies don’t cover:
- Legal services in class actions, post judgments, punitive damages, malpractice or appeals.
- Legal services deemed by us to be frivolous or lacking merit or, in actions where you are the plaintiff and the amount we pay for your legal services exceeds the amount in dispute, or in our reasonable belief you are not actively and reasonably pursuing resolution in your case.

- Legal services arising out of a business interest, investment interests, employment matters, your role as an officer or director of an organization, and patents or copyrights.

- Legal services for the benefit of anyone other than you or covered dependent.
Does ARAG legal insurance cover divorce and post-divorce issues?
Legal matters regarding divorce and post-divorce matters, e.g., divorce, child support, custody, visitation and alimony, are not covered under Legal Protection Plus; however, please note that if your matter is not covered (yet not excluded), you can receive a reduced-fee benefit of up to 25% off a network attorney's normal hourly rate.
How do I know I will be working with a knowledgeable attorney?
Attorneys who are a part of our nationwide network must meet our set of requirements. You'll have access to a nationwide network of thousands of attorneys who average 20 years of experience. Plus, ARAG actively recruits attorneys who are licensed to practice in their state and are in good standing with the relevant regulatory authority in the state(s) where they are licensed and practicing law. As part of the credentialing process, ARAG requires all attorneys to disclose any complaints filed with or any disciplinary action by any attorney disciplinary authority or court, as well as any claims or lawsuits for malpractice against them.
ARAG also re-credentials each attorney every year to ensure they are still meeting the requirements of the ARAG network agreement.
Does ARAG pick the attorney for me?
No, ARAG will provide you with a list of network attorneys who practice in the area of law that relates to your specific legal matter. You will be able to review each attorney’s profile and decide for yourself which network attorney is the best fit for your situation. You can use a non-network attorney and receive indemnity benefits.
Do I have to use the same attorney every time?
No. For each legal issue, you can choose the network attorney.
What if I want to use an attorney who is not in the ARAG network?
You may choose to work with an attorney who is not within the ARAG attorney network. In this situation, you would be billed directly by the attorney and then after paying your deductible you can be reimbursed on an indemnity basis up to the maximum amounts listed in your policy. The insured will need to complete an indemnity claim form to be reimbursed. To request a claim form, please call ARAG Customer Care at 800-819-6010.
